Structure
How it works
A UUID is 32 hex digits in 5 groups. The digit in group 3 is the version. The first hex in group 4 is the variant.
v4 is random. v1 has a timestamp. v7 is time-sortable.
Version
Group 3
1–7 in modern RFCs.
Variant
Group 4
8, 9, A or B = RFC 4122.
Format
With or without -
Compact form is accepted.
Important:
A valid UUID is not a secret key and does not prove authenticity.
Useful notes
- The sample is the classic documentation UUID, not a secret.
- The nil UUID (all zeros) is well formed but flagged separately.
- Reloading the page clears the field.
